The Mijikenda originated from Shungwaya, a region in southern Somalia around the 17th century and settled along the coastal hinterlands in fortified villages called 'kaya'.

Somali ladies wear a headscarf that covers all their hair and is wrapped tightly around the face. This is accompanied by an abaya that covers all the way to the wrists and ankles.
